John Shadow “The Spirit”

I’m not exaggerating when I say that it was Tai Chi that taught me to paint. This in no way diminishes the importance of the teaching I received from my Chinese painting masters. One was Pang Heng Khan, chinese calligrapher and painter from Malacca (Malaysia),Another, Ian Tan is a, chinese painter from Penang (Malaysia), whose advice and suggestions help me on a daily basis.  And then there is my teacher Liu Lanying, who shared all her knowledge with me and welcomed me as her lifelong pupil, according to the ancient Chinese tradition that a pupil is forever. But acquiring the state of mind that freed my mind to be able to paint, I owe to Tai Chi and the enlightened Master John Shadow. His invaluable teachings opened my path to the spiritual world and freed me from the many obstacles that hindered it. Meeting a Master is a unique gift and I hope to be able to honor it with my art.

… it is the soul that dips the brush in the ink, it is the Spirit who controls the ink using the brush. Without culture, ink has no soul, without vitality (CHI) the brush has no Spirit.

Chinese painting is correlated with Taoist philosophy and has a strong connection with nature and with the laws that govern it. “CHI”means vital breath, which is what keeps all beings alive and healthy. To have life, the sign must have Chi, and the painter, while he paints, must be true. This means being in communion with the Universe. The strength of the sign lies in the truth. When the sign is true, it is connected to the Universe, and has power, vitality and breath, which are the elements necessary to communicate the message.
